‘The Shakespeare Requirement: A Novel’ — Julie Schumacher reading and book signing
September 13 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pmFree
Julie Schumacher will read from her highly anticipated book, The Shakespeare Requirement: A Novel, at a September 13 event at Elmer L. Andersen Library.
The book — a sequel to Schumacher’s nationally best-selling Dear Committee Members — is an academic comedy of pitched battles waged for small stakes, tackling the latest disputes on campus from trigger warnings and safe spaces to political correctness and identity politics.
Schumacher, a professor of Creative Writing and English at the University of Minnesota, received the Thurber Prize for American Humor for Dear Committee Members. The Shakespeare Requirement picks up where Committee Members left off: It’s a new academic year at the aptly named third-tier Payne University in the Upper Midwest, where Jason T. Fitger, a disgruntled faculty member, has been elected chair of his dysfunctional and under-funded English department. Challenged in every area from the technological to the administrative, he’s the perfect icon for the liberal arts’ current state of crisis in higher education.
