See note below.

Tayari Jones is one of the most exciting voices in modern fiction. She is a New York Times best-selling author of four novels — including the 2018 bestseller, An American Marriage, which has received multiple awards including the Women’s Prize for Fiction, Aspen Words Prize, an NAACP Image Award, and has sold over 500,000 copies. Don’t miss her reading and on-stage conversation with Lissa Jones-Lofgren, host of KMOJ “Urban Agenda” and “Black Market Reads” podcast.

On May 6, Jones will be the first speaker in the newly named Archie Givens Jr. NOMMO* African American Speaker Series. It builds on the work of the Givens Foundation for African American Literature and honors Archie Givens Jr.’s lifelong commitment to African American writers, audiences, and literature.

NOMMO finds a lasting legacy in the University Libraries’ Givens Collection of African American Literature, while providing a powerful platform for African American cultural leaders.

* NOMMO is a Dogon word meaning “the magic power of the word.”

The Pankake Poetry Series was named in honor of retired librarian Marcia Pankake, whose love of poetry was demonstrated in the countless readings and poetry events she hosted at the University Libraries.
