About the Lecture
Carol A. Lange, Ph.D. is a Professor of Medicine in the University of Minnesota Medical School. Her lecture will present an overview of her latest research on women’s hormones and breast cancer, in particular how estrogen and progesterone receptors act differently in breast cancer cells versus how they act in normal breast tissue.
Her research team seeks to understand how hormones send out-of-context “GROW signals” to cancer cells, telling cells to grow inappropriately. A better understanding of how hormone receptors interact with each other and with genes (DNA) will facilitate the development of improved treatments for breast cancer.
About Carol A. Lange
Lange has an impressive record of scientific accomplishments and has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships for her research and for her mentorship. She has been a pivotal member of the leadership of the Masonic Cancer Center – University of Minnesota, serving as a Program Leader for the Women’s Cancer Program (now the Cell Signaling Program) since 2008.
She serves as the Vice President of Basic Science for the Endocrine Society, Editor-In-Chief of the Hormones and Cancer Journal, and serves as a consultant to several pharmaceutical companies that are developing hormone-related cancer therapies.
Her recent patent of “Breast Cancer Prognosis” contains innovative technology for a diagnostic test that determines which breast cancer patients will benefit from anti-progestin drugs and which will not. In 2012, Lange’s research contributions were recognized by the Endocrine Society Laureate Award. In 2013, Lange was named the University of Minnesota’s Mentor of the Year.
About the Comstock Award
The Ada Comstock Distinguished Women Scholar Lecture and Award was established to honor the scholarly accomplishments and leadership of women faculty at the University of Minnesota and to offer a forum for them to share their insights and ideas with a campus and community audience.
