The Adventure of the Pandemic Posts

Presented by Tim Johnson, Curator, Sherlock Holmes Collections

Cover of Collier's Magazine, December 26, 1903
Cover of Collier’s Magazine, December 26, 1903; “The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist”

The COVID-19 pandemic offered an opportunity to share artwork on social media from the Sherlock Holmes Collections by renowned illustrator, Frederic Dorr Steele. What started out as a simple “work from home” exercise in sharing soon turned into a chance to boost morale, inspire action, and subtly comment on current events. Some of the posts and art will be shared, along with the evolution of these communications, and how they were received by followers on social media.

Telling Trans Stories on the Radio: The Tretter Transgender Oral History Podcast Project

Presented by Tretter Collection staff

Transcripts podcast iconIn June 2020, the Tretter Collection launched a new project: an audio podcast that uses interviews from the Tretter Transgender Oral History Project to tell stories about the history of the struggle for transgender rights. In this presentation, Tretter staff will use stories from the project to explore the ways in which trans movements for justice offer unexpected lessons for everyone seeking to transform the world. Long abandoned by the social safety net, vilified in media and popular culture, trans communities have built robust, loving, and effective mutual aid networks that support the immediate survival needs of trans people and work to imagine a different world, one less structured by punishing racialized gender norms. This work, and these stories, offer lessons relevant to us all living in the context of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis (and its eventual aftermath), as so many are newly dependent on networks of friends, neighbors, and community for basic survival as well as connection and joy.
