‘Join or Die:  Political Cartoons in the Age of Revolution’

Presented by Marguerite Ragnow, Curator, James Ford Bell Library

Join or Die political cartoonPolitical satire is a long-held tradition in Western culture; this certainly was true in the late-17th and 18th centuries, when peoples around the Atlantic World sought to throw off the yokes of oppression. Join Marguerite Ragnow, curator of the James Ford Bell Library, as she discusses the context for these often cryptic cartoons, many of which coincide with examinations of the economic “bubbles” experienced in the 1720s highlighted by the Bell’s digital exhibition: “The Panics & Plagues of 1720: A View from 2020” and related programming at the U of M, the Newberry Library, and the New York Public Library.
