Minnesota Nice:
Organic and Locally Sourced Tales from the Archives

The Archives and Special Collections at the University of Minnesota contains more stories of nice and not-so-nice Minnesotans than you can shake a Pronto Pup at. From the selfless and heroic local innovators and activists to the insular recidivists throughout its history, Minnesota’s historical extremes will be highlighted in the 2017-2018 First Fridays season.

On Vineland Place: Untold Stories from the Center Opera

Presented by Kathryn Hujda, Assistant Curator, Performing Arts Archives

H. Wesley Balk was the stage director of the Center Opera Company (now Minnesota Opera) for nearly 20 years. Under his direction, the ensemble premiered some of the most breathtaking and well-received contemporary works of opera ever staged. And though the company’s legacy of staging innovative work is well-documented, it’s difficult to find any information about Balk himself. Weaving together resources from the Performing Arts Archives, Walker Art Center Archives, and Nautilus Music-Theater, this presentation explores the growing pains of an organization-turned-institution, documenting the complex history of the Center Opera and one of its equally complex leaders.

About First Fridays

First Fridays is made possible by a generous gift from Governor Elmer L. and Mrs. Eleanor Andersen in honor of former University Librarian Dr. Edward B. Stanford.
