As students return to campus, many new or returning students may have questions about the goings on at the Toaster, so here are some frequently asked questions that you may have!

What is the Toaster?

The Toaster is a 6,500-square-foot collaborative space for UMN students located in the basement of Walter Library. The space was created in collaboration with University Libraries and the Holmes Center for Entrepreneurship at the Carlson School of Management.

What is the Toaster Used For?

The Toaster can be utilized for anything you want, from connecting and collaborating with fellow students to launching a product or company or simply utilizing the many resources the University and Libraries offer. This includes the Breakerspace and all the equipment such as 3D printers, sewing machines, and other arts and crafts supplies. You can also access our Media Services for cameras, tripods, and other media equipment, as well as consultation on these services.

Does the Toaster Host Events?

Yes! We host anything from student group meetings to entrepreneurial showcases and even small group study sessions between students. Here is a list of upcoming events.

How do I reserve a space?

Join the Toaster community, which gives you access to reservations for large events and small groups, and updates you on the latest goings at the Toaster. In addition to being a great spot to drop in, connect, and collaborate, the Toaster has a variety of spaces that can be reserved for FREE.

  • Event Spaces are open to registered student organizations, staff, and faculty for student-centered meetings, events, and workshops.
  • Small Group Spaces are available to all students for 2 hours at a time up to two weeks in advance. Just sign up for the Toaster Community.

Stop by the Toaster or visit our website to explore available spaces for your next ideation session, student org meeting, or hands-on workshop.

What should I do if I have a specific question?

Ask our Toaster Ambassadors (look for staff buttons!), who can be located at the front desk of the breaker space. You can also email us at toaster@umn.edu, or drop us a message on Discord at z.umn.edu/toaster-discord.

Can you talk?

Unlike most library spaces, we encourage students to talk freely and collaborate, so talk as much as you’d like, but please be respectful!

Is it free?

Yes, everything in the space is for you to use, including the 3-D printers, VR headset, and button makers, so create and innovate as you please!
