Calling to Question

By February 9, 2019September 16th, 2023No Comments

Black and white photo shows a crowd of student protestors holding signs to support the former General College. A protestor in the foreground speaks into a microphone to address the group.Calling to Question celebrates the people at the U of M College of Liberal Arts. The exhibit explores the challenges they have faced, and how they have questioned both the college itself and the role of liberal education in society.

Through their struggles we see how liberal education promotes questioning as a way to strive for the betterment of the human condition — sometimes successfully and sometimes not.

The 2018-2019 academic year marks the 150th Anniversary of the College of Liberal
Arts at the University of Minnesota. It was founded as the College of Science, Literature, and Arts, “to promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes.”
