Learn. Make. Innovate. These are fitting words to accompany the welcome sign for the new Makerspace at the Bio-Medical Library, joining the Breakerspace in Walter Library as the two library makerspace locations on campus.
What is a makerspace?
Makerspaces offer tools and community for individuals who what to tinker as they explore solutions to problems — big and small.
They are a place where you can feel free to fail forward.
“We all start somewhere and are capable of learning,” says Jonathan Koffel, Emerging Technology and Innovation Strategist at the Bio-Medical Library. “Move outside your comfort zone, let your ideas and energy drive you, strive for good enough and move forward when things don’t work.”
They are also a place where you can learn from others.
“We encourage people using our makerspaces to introduce themselves to others, to ask a lot of questions, and share knowledge,” says Koffel. “Be proud of the work you create and show it off.”
Koffel adds that you can watch for more formal opportunities for individuals to share skills and expertise through planned programing.
Tools to tinker
The two Libraries makerspaces are now open for use during limited hours. Individuals are encouraged to use existing tools, and to make suggestions for future editions. Current equipment includes:
- 3D printers
- Vinyl cutters
- Robotics and electronics tools
- Soldering irons
- Sewing machines
- Hot glue guns
- Rotary tools
- Prototyping supplies — from pasta to popsicle sticks
Getting started
All are welcome to visit our makerspaces during open hours, with expanded hours planned for the future.
