The Beauty That Requires Health: Four Landscapes

rf_pagami_site1_9-2012The exhibition features artist Regina Flanagan’s longitudinal study of four landscapes in transition: a floodplain forest; an old-growth big woods forest; an oak savanna; and the aftermath of a major fire in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The narrative arc of natural forces and human actions are observed in this photographic series.

Philosopher Marcia Eaton asserted in her essay “The Beauty that Requires Health” that art with landscape as its subject has an ethical obligation to reveal underlying functions. Eaton’s thinking, along with the land ethic philosophy of conservationist Aldo Leopold, are what motivate photographer Regina Flanagan’s study.
