: For Students, Faculty, and Staff 
U Libraries too important to take for granted
If you’re reading this, chances are good your love of libraries is as broad and deep as mine. After all, how can we not treasure an institution that simultaneously satisfies and piques our curiosity, one that draws together all kinds of seekers and learners under one vast, endlessly expanding umbrella, giving library users both the tools and the skills to advance knowledge and contribute to humanity in ways large and small?
That may well sound like a description not only of a great library but of the University of Minnesota itself, and no wonder – because the University Libraries is central to the University, its values, and its achievements. The Libraries will be crucial as the University addresses the recently outlined Grand Challenges, from embracing excellence on our vibrant campuses to building exceptional research and curriculum that enable us to respond to the greatest needs of our global society. As the University proceeds with the initiatives outlined in its 10-year strategic plan, you will see the Libraries and its expert librarians as leaders in providing access to global knowledge resources, always taking an active role in partnerships, always driving innovation.
We wish to thank the many donors whose generosity brings vitality and strength to the Libraries and its collections.

One way the Friends furthers these causes is to offer events that illuminate the Libraries’ collections and initiatives. During the 2014-15 academic year, for example, capacity crowds came to a stand-out series of programs that began with Isabel Wilkerson speaking on the Great Migration of African-Americans from the South to the North – an address that none who attended will soon forget.
The season continued with one memorable program after another: a Nagel Lecture by Richard Moe; an interview of mystery writer and poet Mary Logue in conversation with Maria Jette; a Feast of Words event featuring Professor Brenda Child on Speaking Ojibwe in the Great Lakes; a presentation by the Babbage Institute’s Tom Misa on the computing industry as birthed in Minnesota; a most eloquent, stirring Pankake Poetry Reading by Michael Dennis Browne; and the Friends’ Annual Celebration, yet another heartwarming experience – a Kirschner Lecture by Deborah Madison, a pioneering proponent of the farm-to-table movement, complete with a sumptuous meal.
Thanks are in order to the Friends’ committee members who put together such superb seasons, as well as those who increase the Friends’ outreach, oversee awards programs for the Libraries’ student workers and professional staff, engender financial support, and attract committed, engaged leaders to the Friends board. We are also sincerely grateful to the generous individuals and organizations listed in the following pages, who have come forward to support the Libraries.
Please join me in thanking all these Friends, and most especially Judy Hornbacher, the Friends’ immediate past president, for her extraordinary, enlightening, and passionate leadership. She has been an amazing partner for University Librarian Wendy Pradt Lougee, her staff, and the Friend’s board.
