Hispanic Heritage Month: Databases at U Libraries

The University of Minnesota Libraries provides access to databases containing primary sources for research on Hispanic history and culture. Also it subscribes to indexes to the periodical literature about Hispanics.

Latino Literature, published by Alexander Street Press, contains thousands of creative literature titles by Hispanics. These include plays, novels, short stories, and poems.

Informe, published by Gale, is a full-text index to periodicals published in Latin America, and by Hispanics in the United States of America, including academic journals, magazines, and newspapers. News articles being records of contemporary events, this database is a useful tool to find primary sources for research on recent Hispanic history.

Chicano Database is the most comprehensive index to the secondary literature about Chicanos and other Hispanics. It includes academic journal articles, books chapters, and conference papers. Unlike Informe, this index does not include the text of the titles cited. But each citation includes an informative description.

Hispanic American Periodicals Index is mainly an index to Latin American academic journals, but it analyzes some academic journals published by Hispanics in the United States, like Aztlan. Also it is a very useful source to academic journal articles about the history as well as the recent immigration from Latin America to the United States, about the the history of the United States border with Mexico, and the development of of Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Cuban communities in the United States.
