About the Event

Enjoy light refreshments, conversation, and brief remarks by local artists and scholars who have worked with the Collection as researchers and artists in residence.

This is also your chance to:

  • Hold a first edition of the first book published by an African American writer, Phillis Wheatley’s 1773 Poems on Various Subjects Religious and Moral!
  • View ephemera from Minnesota’s hip-hop community!
  • Explore the archives of Penumbra Theatre!

About the Collection

Established in 1986, the Givens Collection is a community resource for collecting, preserving, and making accessible nearly 250 years of works by African American authors, playwrights, artists, and more.

Since 2014, the Givens Collection has partnered with Penumbra Theatre Company to lead a national digital initiative that facilitates access to African American history and culture, Umbra Search African American History (umbrasearch.org), an online search tool that brings together more than 400,000 digital objects from over 1,000 US libraries and archives.
