Mania and Delirium! Plants that Drove People Crazy
Certain plants have a history of kindling mankind’s need to possess them. They were objects of desire not only for their beauty, but also their scarcity, bizarreness, and newness to society. They were deemed to be worth fortunes, travail, and risk of life and limb.
Kathy Allen, Librarian, Andersen Horticultural Library (AHL), will recount a few of these stories – Tulipmania, Pteridomania, and Orchidelirium among them – illustrated with images from the AHL’s special collections.
