The changing role of academic libraries

Academic libraries are changing. So are we. It used to be that the perceived strength of an academic library was based largely on the size of its collections. Not anymore. Now, it’s more about how well a library engages its users, collaborates with other libraries, and helps lead innovation at its own institution. Collections still play a role, but the emphasis has shifted to services and to rare and unique materials.

Below are just a few examples of how we are evolving to support teaching, learning, research, and outreach at the University of Minnesota:

  • We established a user-driven acquisition program for eBooks.
  • We teamed with units across the University to develop eLearning initiatives.
  • We partnered with other academic libraries to help build what may be the world’s largest digital library, the HathiTrust.
  • We continue to acquire, preserve, and safeguard rare books and archives.
