Inspired by the remarkably vibrant and richly detailed illustrations found in rare books in the Andersen Horticultural and Wangensteen Historical Libraries, Ursula Hargens’ ceramic tiles reflect an historic natural world through a contemporary filter. These ceramic tiles depict endangered Minnesota wildflowers including the Western Prairie Fringed Orchid, first documented by the Lewis & Clark expedition.

Funded by the Minnesota State Arts Board, Hargens, a 2012 McKnight Fellowship recipient, is also the founder and lead instructor of MN NICE – the Minnesota New Institute for Ceramic Education, an 8-month certificate program through the Northern Clay Center.
