Kirschner is a marvelous, eclectic collection
Noted cookbook author and internationally acclaimed proponent of vegetarian cooking, Deborah Madison, was the featured speaker at the Friends of the University of Minnesota Libraries’ annual celebration and Second Kirschner Lecture on May 5. Formerly the manager of the farmers market in Santa Fe and co-founder of the Monte del Sol Edible Kitchen Garden, Madison has a long-abiding passion for local/regional foods and those who produce them. She has worked as a chef, teacher, consultant, and cookbook author.
Madison also took time during her visit to explore the Doris S. Kirschner Cookbook Collection, which is housed at Magrath Library on the St. Paul campus. “This is a very marvelous, eclectic collection that was formed by someone who really loved cookbooks of all stripes,” Madison said about the collection.

2015 Staff Development Grants
Erin George, an Assistant Archivist at the University of Minnesota Archives, will use the grant to attend the Western Archives Institute (WAI) at Santa Clara University in California. Described as “an intensive, two-week program that provides integrated instruction in basic archival practices,” WAI is targeted to those who are practicing archivists but have not received formal instruction.
Kristen Mastel, an Outreach and Instruction Librarian and liaison to the College of Continuing Education, Extension, and Agricultural Education, will use the grant to attend the 2015 International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions World Library and Information Congress in Cape Town, South Africa. The conference showcases libraries programs, services, and research from around the world.
2015 Outstanding Library Student Employee Awards
Emily Atchison, who has worked in the Tretter Collection for the past two years, showing extraordinary leadership and making a transformational difference in the collection.
Andrew Nelson, the current Student Exhibits Design Assistant, who assists the Libraries Exhibits Designer and is involved with all the stages of exhibit design and production.
2015 Student Photo Contest
Tying for the top spot were Nan Sinchai and Meron Ayele. Tying for third place were Liza Gorman-Baer and Maria Soroka. Alicia Lim won the Student Choice Award.
Judging for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place was done by three graduate students in photography in the University’s art department, the chair of the Friends of the Libraries awards committee, and two members of the University Libraries communications team.
The results for the Student Choice Award were based on the number of likes each photo received on the Libraries’ Facebook page.
