Claire Stewart is the new Associate University Librarian for Research and Learning at the University of Minnesota Libraries. Stewart, who came to Minnesota after more than 20 years at Northwestern University Library, began her new duties Jan. 12.

“The University of Minnesota Libraries has a well-deserved reputation for excellence and visionary leadership,” Stewart said. “I’m thrilled to be joining the team at Minnesota as the University implements a new strategic plan and the Libraries continue to redefine our role as partners in research and learning.”

Stewart most recently served at Northwestern as director for the Center for Scholarly Communication and Digital Curation (since 2011) and head of the Department of Digital Collections (since 2007). At Northwestern, she has been credited for taking a leadership role in defining new library services in the areas of digital scholarship, e-science and data management, and copyright and scholarly communication – while reaching across campus to build and strengthen collaborations.

Currently, Stewart is chair of the Association for College and Research Libraries’ Research and Scholarly Environment Committee and serves on the HathiTrust Collections Committee, the SHARE Repository Community Working Group, and CIC’s Data Storage Working Group.

“Her career at Northwestern encompassed progressive and deep engagement with library services and technologies, ranging from establishing one of the first e-reserve programs in the country, to digital media services, to significant campus partnerships,” said University Librarian Wendy Pradt Lougee, head of the University of Minnesota Libraries. “Her extensive service, technology, and collections expertise brings an exceptionally rich portfolio to the R & L division, to the University Libraries, and to the University of Minnesota.”

Stewart started her career in 1993 at Northwestern, where she held a number of positions, including: Acting Head of the Marjorie I. Mitchell Multimedia Center, coordinator of digitization projects, head of Digital Media Services, and director of Northwestern’s New Media Center.
